On the San Francisco new we very regularly hear about shooting in Oakland, on the other side of the Bay. Oakland includes some difficult quarters where drug is generating violence. Having this on the local news makes it less distant than when reading it on the national news paper. It always amazes me when thinking about the relative feeling of safety. As this is really a relative feeling, due to ignorance of what is really happening or not happening. MEdia do play a lot on that perception by either emphasizing the stories or completely ignoring a situation.
