...and it has a name - innovation trauma
Professor Liisa Välikangas writes about "innovation trauma" in Tekniikka&Talous. Innovation trauma = utter disappointment in the minds of people involved in corporate internal start-up when it has failed and been closed for reason or another...
Sunray (cloud computer) within Sun Microsystems as an example:
"(After the failure) Some of the members (of the extremely hard working team) just made a conclusion that now I am wiser and from now on I will never do any innovation work. Others just left the company. The fact, that the reasons and consequences of the failure were not analysed, lead to cynisism.
Innovation trauma must be treated, so that also those who gave everything for the project get over it. Innovation is characterized by not meeting the targets. That means that lots of traumas are created. When un-treated, these will lead to bitterness. Most talented people leave the company, and company is left with those people who have never tried anything new and thus not been so heavily disppapointed."
Another piece to the puzzle of how Nokia Ventures Organization could have been improved.
